MAYER HAWTHORNE – “JUST AIN’T GONNA WORK OUT”

OK folks. This one is special. This song could have been made in 1965. Does this dude look at all like he would make this kind of music? Either way, this is too dope. Perfect song and solid visual presentation. Mayer Hawthorne, who lists Curtis Mayfield and Smokey Robinson as influences, is signed to Stones Throw records, the home of legendary hip-hop producers J Dilla and Madlib, among others. Personally, I might just have to cop the heart-shaped vinyl, available here along with the mp3. Once again, don’t thank me, thank Nick.

MARVIN GAYE – “WHERE ARE WE GOING”

Where are we going? Somewhere we’ve never been before. But we’ll create it. We can paint it. With colors so sweet. They just can’t be beat. It hasn’t been done before, but this is our chance. It’s our chance for change. Yours and mine, and hers and his. It’s us. But not them. War is not the answer.

MICHAEL JACKSON ‘BEAT IT’ INTERVIEW 1982

This is lightweight fascinating. Michael Jackson, arguably at the pinnacle of his career, speaks with the 80′s television series Celebrity Showcase about his life, his friends and his rise to fame. This is so interesting not only for the answers he gives, but to think of these answers in hindsight some 20 years later. Like, “Oh maybe this is why he turned out like this..” This is an important and interesting interview to see for anyone ever interested or a fan of MJ.

MOS DEF – “FLOWERS”

This video counters the previous. If T.K. fumbled, Mos picks it up and keeps running with it. Mos Def’s new album The Ecstatic drops June 9. In conjunction with the release, Mos is soon to announce a U.S tour. More on that as it comes.

NINA SIMONE – “AINT GOT NO, I’VE GOT LIFE”

Eunice Kathleen Waymon, known to the world as Nina Simone was a Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter and civil rights activist. Categorized best as a jazz musician her eclectic sound takes her to moments of jubilation and just as quickly brings her to moments of despair. Also known as the High Priestess of Soul, her music has influenced the likes of Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys and John Legend. “Aint Got No, I Got Life,” was recorded in 1968 and became a huge hit in the UK before rising to prominence in the US. Nina passed away in ’03 but her music will live on forever. Enjoy.

“I don’t need no dreams when I’m by your side
Every moment takes me to paradise

Warm you in my arms and melt your fears away
Show you all the magic that a perfect love can make
I need you night and day”
