GIL SCOTT HERON’S THE LAST HOLIDAY: A MEMOIR

Gil Scott-Heron

Last year, the world lost a true revolutionary. It seemed that only in the years leading up to his death, had greater pop culture begun to realize the true impact and importance Gil Scott-Heron had had on its own landscape. Though hip-hop and jazz historicists, vinyl collectors and political minds had been singing his praises for decades, it seemed that the last few years of his life saw that well-deserved reverence reaching an unprecedented level. The release of his final album, I’m New Here, a collaborative effort with XL Recordings founder Richard Russell, and the posthumous Jamie xx remix project, We’re New Here served to further cement his place as a luminary of modern music and culture.

Today saw the release of The Last Holiday, an autobiographical memoir written in the last years of Gil’s life. The memoir tells the stories of some of the more formative moments of his extraordinary life and career, using one particular story as a sort of centerpiece through which others are told. “The Last Holiday” refers to Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, and more specifically to Gil’s experience touring alongside Stevie Wonder as a part of 1980′s Hotter Than July Tour, during which he and Stevie helped to campaign for MLK Day’s status as an official holiday, all to the tune of Stevie’s “Happy Birthday”. In the excerpt below, Gil writes beautifully and poetically about childhood memories, about his experience with Stevie, and about the tragedy of fallen heroes. In the wake of his own death, his insight seems all the more poignant now.

FRIDAY LEFTOVERS (10.28.10)

The Leftovers

More often than not, Halloween weekends are memorable ones. Some are classics, and some work out less well than others. Freshman year was a flop and a half, and last year was comedy. Anyway, Halloween is a solid excuse for all things debaucherous and stupid. Get it in this weekend and stay safe. For the time being, we got you with some new slaps from Lykke Li (Danny I see you), Yeezy and Cee-Lo, to name a few. The Crystal Castles with Robert Smith (The Cure) is crazy, and The Hood Internet is what you might call weekend appropriate. Duck Sauce and Young Dro? Come on. This is Bowties.

BOB MARLEY – “IS THIS LOVE?”

NAS & DAMIAN MARLEY – “PROMISED LAND”

Nas & Damian Marley

This might just have to be a summer anthem. And now that, thanks to Dressy Slacks, we have these two coming out to the Jazz Reggae festival at UCLA, we’ll be slapping this on repeat around the end of May. Nas & Damian go in on this one over a Dennis Brown sample, creating what looks to be one of the standout tracks from the upcoming Distant Relatives album. I’d recommend having some trees handy for this one.

BLUNT ART BY CLIFF MAYNARD

Chronic Art 1

Maybe we should call this recycling on a higher level. Haha. I’m laughing. It’s Saturday, so please enjoy yourself.

Using the last remains of joints, visual artist Cliff Maynard arranges the ends of roach papers into these magical works of art. Originally a student at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Cliff originally was introduced to the art through his study of mosaics, “I was studying mosaics in school, and I just remember sort of making this connection in my head between the tiles and roach papers.” From there, Cliff set out to create his portraits by cutting up the roaches into little pieces of paper, and reorganizing them by shade and size to form his portraits. Peculiar and extraordinary.

NAS & DAMIAN MARLEY: DISTANT RELATIVES

For months now, rumors have swirled around the idea of a collaborative effort from Nas & Damian Marley. Then, Rock the Bells unveiled the lineup for their summer festival series with the two artists co-headlining the bill, a promotion push for the forthcoming album. This video, directed by the talented Nabil Elderkin, is the preview for Distant Relatives. Not that I’d expect anything less, but this looks to be some pretty powerful shit. The kind of music that starts movements. Watch for yourself.

BOB MARLEY ON HOW TO LOVE A WOMAN

“You may not be her first, her last, or her only. She loved before she may love again. But if she loves you now, what else matters? She’s not perfect – you aren’t either, and the two of you may never be perfect together but if she can make you laugh, cause you to think twice, and admit to being human and making mistakes, hold onto her and give her the most you can. She may not be thinking about you every second of the day, but she will give you a part of her that she knows you can break – her heart. So don’t hurt her, don’t change her, don’t analyze and don’t expect more than she can give. Smile when she makes you happy, let her know when she makes you mad, and miss her when she’s not there.”

SOUL REBEL: AN INTIMATE PORTRAIT OF BOB MARLEY

Photojournalist David Burnett recently released Soul Rebel: An Intimate Portrait of Bob Marley, a collection of pictures taken in 1976 on an assignment for Time Magazine to document the growing popularity of reggae music. The book offers a look at the legendary artist both in his home environment as well as on the road, featuring over 200 pictures, only a few of which were featured in the Time article. Too dope for words. Cop the book here

BOB MARLEY: 60 VISIONS

“We don’t think upon a low level. We think high. That means we can live and we can see things. We can stay from above, and see things low. If you stay from below and look above, you have want. If you stay from above and look ‘pon them below, then you can’t want. Because you have to bend down too low to pick up something…”
