NEWSPAPER SCULPTURES

Nick Georgiou Newspaper Sculptures

Good morning to some, good afternoon to others. Another day on the bowties, so happy you could make it. It just kinda dawned on me that you’re/we’re out here, doing this. Because there’s like a billion fucking websites out there, but you’re here with us. And that’s humbling. I’m going to flesh out this idea a bit more in the near future, but for now, thank you.

I think what’s so wonderful about our movement is that we’re running off creativity, which in turn is running off humanity. As long as there are people, creativity will thrive. Somewhere, some place, people are creating, always, and I think that’s amazing. Think about it. Someone out there is about to finish a fucking masterpiece today. And someone else is just beginning. And Nick Georgiou finished his a while ago, but here it is today. Newspaper Sculptures. Who would’ve thunk? Find your medium, and make something. Where there’s a will there’s a way.

AEROPLANE – “WE CAN’T FLY”

Photobucket

They’re saying we can’t fly, but quite frankly we already are. Above the clouds, amongst the birds, clear skies ahead. We’re already on cruise control…

If this wasn’t a slap already, the Hassan + Henoch co-sign makes this one certified. It feels like Aeroplane served this one up just in time for summer, as the Belgium duo have created this infectious dance-centric track for folks to get down to. Close your eyes. Can you see it? The next celebration? Henoch & Roy hitting the janky? Oh boy. It’s only getting better.

LAND ART BY RICHARD SHILLING

Photobucket

I feel like everyone knows us so well now. You know the kind of shit we like, and how we like to get down. Although we still throw a few curve balls here and there, for the most part, I think we’ve gotten quite comfortable together. Take your shoes off and stay for a while.

Echoing the work of Andy Goldsworthy, Richard Shilling has amassed a collection of vibrant works using nature’s simplest materials. Utilizing leafs and fruit to create his pieces, Richard’s work relates the fact that medium matters little when it comes to creativity. What’s most important is the process, and then the outcome. makedopeshit.com. Happy Sunday.

DOWNTOWN CALLING (TRAILER)

New York in the late ’70s and early ’80s was a pretty chaotic time. In an excellent short piece on The Summer of ’77 in the latest New Yorker, Tim Long describes a time “when the city was ravaged by drugs, drugged by corruption, corrupted by murder, and murdered by ravagement.” Amidst all the chaos though, some of the most important cultural movements took root. Within the span of less than a decade Punk culture, post-punk, Hip-Hop and a vibrant art scene all became part of a sort of subcultural renaissance. From Byrne to Basquiat to Bambaataa, Downtown Calling aims to capture an era in New York unlike any other by investigating it’s lasting impacts. Downtown Calling premieres at the New York International Latino Film Festival on Wednesday.

BEATS & BOXERS: PAINTINGS BY TOM RUSSELL

Beats & BoxersBeats & Boxers

Upon walking into the Yard Dog Gallery in Austin last month, I realized just how dope the art scene really is out there. The first of a number of collections to catch my eye in YD though, was Beats & Boxers. Tom Russell, an Austin-based singer/songwriter turned his sights to a different artistic medium for this project, creating a collection of paintings depicting two seemingly disparate sets of icons from 20th-century pop culture: beat poets and boxers. With images depicting Allen Ginsberg, Muhammad Ali and William S. Burroughs, among others, Beats & Boxers is a unique take on Americana. See the full collection or purchase here, or in person at Yard Dog in Austin.

REINTRODUCING KANYE WEST

STREET VISUALS

Sandire Estrade Boulet

I like the idea that you can kinda turn anything into anything. I know that’s kind of vague but it sort of fits to characterize the work above. Whether it be stairs that turn into a piano, or flies that turn into people, we can combine anything we want to create something new. The work of Sandire Estrade Boulet is another excellent example. Visualizing peculiar usages for everyday objects, Sandrine’s created a unique collection of street art pieces. Hope you enjoy.

THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY & SEX LIFE OF ANDY WARHOL

Given how ubiquitous his work is in pop culture, you might wonder what you could possibly say about Andy Warhol that hasn’t been said already. Apparently more than I thought. Village Voice founder John Wilcock’s The Autobiography and Sex Life of Andy Warhol, originally released over 40 years ago represents the most detailed account of one of the 20th centuries most influential yet enigmatic figures. Detailing the life and work of Warhol through interviews with the characters that made up his inner circle, the new edition of The Autobiography promises an intimate portrait of the artist, plus selections from his catalog of work. The way they put this one together is just too dope. Purchase here.

SEBASTIEN TELLIER – “LOOK”

I woke up to this video on my wall this morning. And I’ve got to say, I’m impressed. Kind of reminds me of the Breakbot video. But this video raises a similar question that we recently discussed. Is this art or objectification? Personally, I think it’s a little of both, and that ain’t bad! Props to Sebastien Tellier for the slap, Petra Mrzyk for the visuals, and Louise for the find. Hyphen’s happy.

“HE WEARS IT” BY JOHN WOO

John Woo Star Wars

Step 1. Choose an epic saga (Star Wars). Step 2. Pick out characters from the films. Step 3. Dress them in today’s finest menswear. Step 4. Sit back and enjoy the love. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t think to put Darth Vader and Band of Outsiders in the same sentence, let alone the same picture. Nonetheless, illustrator John Woo has done just that. Creating a hand sketched look book from some of today’s most prominent menswear designers, Woo’s created a unique snapshot of the times, uniting the past and present in style. Who new Jar jar could be this icy…

CULINARY CREATIONS BY CARL KLEINER

Carl Kleiner Art

I’m always pleased when I come across food art. Simply because it relates the fact that you can use any medium to create compelling art. But what constitutes art nowadays? I’ve been struggling as of late to come up with a functional definition for the word art, Reed broke it down for us pretty well today. Nonetheless, the work of Carl Kleiner is inspiring. Taking on abstract forms, Kleiner’s work allows viewers to draw their own conclusions about the presentation and meaning of his work. Mixing swiss cheese with red peppers, and tortillas with zucchini, Kleiner’s managed to create these colorful creations for your viewing pleasure. I know Melissa and Raji are juiced.

“HUMAN FLIES”

Photobucket

I’m not too big on killing things, but this has got to be one of the most creative things I’ve come across in my time doing this. I wish I could tell you what this artist name was, but alas, his alias is unknown. What I do know, is that to create these pieces, the “artist” had to kill these flies, and let them sit in the sun for an hour to dry. From there, they took a pencil to paper and made these. Extraordinary and peculiar.
