JOSEPH CARNEVALE’S BARREL MONSTER

Joseph Carnevale is a Raleigh, North Carolina based street artist and guerilla photographer. Says the part-time construction worker of this piece, “it was something I had to do”. The 15-foot monster, crafted using barrels from a construction site got Carnevale arrested on charges of vandalism, larceny and destruction of property. Hamlin Associates, the construction company, chose not to press charges, and has since commissioned the young artist to create a replica of the structure. The Raleigh Police Department is still hatin though, insisting on following through with the charges. Joseph, we fuck with you and wish you the best. Jake I see you.

KID CUDI FEAT. KANYE & COMMON – “I MAKE HER SAY”

Another visual offering from the G.O.O.D music coalition. Dope off top because of the departure from the images of girls, money, and jewelery that we’ve seen for the last decade. There’s a natural air to this video which is refreshing, further related through the complimentary colors used throughout the video. Attention to the aesthetic was a primary focus according to Cudi, “We wanted to go for a real abstract and iconic-looking video, something real artsy. It’s really dope,” he said. “It’s almost like there’s still shots and there’s movement going on in them. It’s really trippy.” Gaga cameo would’ve been nice but a settled video all around. Appreciated.

BANKSY DOES AFRICA

Said to be painted in Mali, world renowned street artist Banksy has struck again in Western Africa. Fresh off his efforts within the Bristol Museum, these pieces were said to be done about a year ago, only to be discovered now. How dope is that? A famed artist at large? But not even, because now the world fucks with him. Banksy probably travels the world, creating pieces along the way, finishes, kicks back, lights one up, and says to himself, “Damn, I’m killin it right now…”

PAINTINGS BY TREK THUNDER KELLY

Trek Thunder Kelly is the truth. In the paintings featured here, Kelly juxtaposes cultural icons with corporate symbols, often creating an ironic contrast between the two. By rearranging familiar images in unusual ways, his art allows us to confront our commercialized culture head-on, challenging our concepts of sexuality and propriety along the way. Over the years, the Venice-based artist has built up an impressive collection of thought-provoking and controversial works, including these and these, for a few brief examples. More from him soon.

3D SCULPTURES FROM PLASTIC BY ROBERT BRADFORD

Often times it seems as though taking the slogan of Nike and Just Doing It, is all you need to become an artist. I know there’s been times when we skeptically glance at a piece of art, saying to ourselves, “Damn I bet I can make some abstract scribbles and sell it for thousands too!” I don’t mean to negate the creativity of artists who create brilliant and memorable works.

PICASSO’S LIGHT DRAWING

This collection of photos, taken by photographer Gjon Mili for Life magazine in 1949, shows Pablo Picasso himself experimenting with light drawing. The sketches were made in a dark room, drawn quickly with a flashlight, and captured with a slow shutter speed, creating the images you see here.

POST IT NOTES HAVE NEVER BEEN THIS ICY

This is up there with the MUTO wall painting. Another great example of stop motion animation. Taking a series of still shots and combining them to create a scene, or tell a story. Kind of like a real life flip book. Created by Savannah College student Bang-yao Liu, the 2 minute film portrays an interaction between the post it notes and a young man, that is anything but ordinary.

UK STUDENT CREATES INVISIBLE CAR

Let’s take a moment to really appreciate this work. Like, who would’ve thought to do this shit? Sara Watson did. A 22 year old student at the University of Central Lancashire, Sara spray painted this hoopty Skoda Fabia to create this piece. Her work gives the illusion that the car is actually invisible. In regards to her work, Sara stated, “I was experimenting with the whole concept of illusion but needed something a bit more physical to make a real impact.” The piece is similar to the works of street artist Julian Beever who also toys with perspective to create memorable illusions.

KEVIN VAN AELST PHOTOGRAPHY

Kevin Van Aelst is a pretty incredible artist. His pieces consist of everyday objects, rearranged and decorated in creative and intricate ways, often on a tiny scale, making the precision of the work all the more impressive. Van Aelst himself frames his work as examining “the distance between the ‘big picture’ and the ‘little things’ in life- the banalities of our daily lives, and the sublime notions of identity and existence”. Pretty interesting stuff. Check here for more of Kevin’s work.

BLACK MOTH SUPER RAINBOW – “BORN ON A DAY THE SUN DIDN’T RISE”

For lack of better words, this is drug music. Black Moth Super Rainbow has been described as psychedelic, electronica, and pop, but in my experience, they make some really cool shit to listen to when you’re blown. Characterized by the use of vocoder and other electronic instruments, their sound is one of the most original out there. “Born on a Day” is the single from Eating Us the band’s latest LP, which was released in a limited-edition “hairy” version complete with synthetic hair on the inner sleeve. Unfortunately, the hairy joints sold out pretty quick, but the album is still available here

THE ROLE OF PERSPECTIVE EXAMINED THROUGH SUBWAY ART

Alongside the efforts of Julian Beever, this creative work falls under the category of Trompe-l’Å“il, which means ‘trick of the eye,’ and is defined as an art technique involving extremely realistic imagery in order to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects appear in three dimensions, instead of actually being a two-dimensional painting.

HARLEM IN FLUX

Photographer Camilo Jose Vergara has recently finished work on Harlem in Flux, a 100-picture exhibit featured at the New York Historical Society. The work displays his documentation of Harlem over the last 40 years, focusing on the ways in which neighborhoods change over time. By photographing various storefronts as they change in shape and function, Vergara manages to capture the essence of many of the important economic and cultural shifts in recent history. The result is a portrait of how these various factors effect urban neighborhoods over time. A good example is the photo above, depicting a man named Eddie who farmed the empty lot shown for years in the 90s; the location in the picture is now home to luxury apartments and a Starbucks. See more from Harlem in Flux, as well as other collections from Vergara’s Invincible Cities series here.

KANYE WEST + RIHANNA – “PARANOID”

We held off on this until the official video dropped. This is it. Directed by acclaimed photographer Nabil Elderkin. Props to Kanye for kind of rejuvenating Rihanna’s star quality after her drama. I appreciate Kanye videos for the simple reason that they always deviate from the norm, which is refreshing. The wolf is the dopest part. A quality video on all fronts.
