Until I came across Jenkins Jellies, the only jellies I was aware of were the ones associated with peanut butter. Little did I know how much more there was. While strolling through the L.A. Street Food Fest two weeks ago, I happened upon a tray of crackers and jelly. “Go ahead, try one,” I was coaxed, from jelly creator Hilary Danner. I obliged, and was sold after the first bite. Quickly gathering Hilary’s contact information, I became intent on learning more about these wonderful jellies.
My explorations led me to Highland Park, California. Nestled next to the popular Los Angeles destinations of Silverlake and Los Feliz, Highland Park is another up and coming town which offers residents and visitors a more manageable Los Angeles experience. From art galleries to eateries of all types, Highland Park is an unexpected gem of East Los Angeles.
A Highland Park resident for 15 years, Hilary Danner happened upon her novel business idea by chance. Moving into a home with an assortment of fruit trees, Hilary did what any food loving creative would do, make jelly. From apple, to fig, to Hell’s Fire Jalapeño, Jenkins Jellies offer a variety of seasonal flavors made from Hilary’s fruitful backyard. With a variety of uses, the jellies go great with crackers, eggs and an assortment of meats.
In addition to the jelly, Hilary and Maria’s boutique Studio Root 66, is an amalgamation of fun and creative items. From $3 lipsticks to $2,000 paintings, the items at Studio Root 66 relate the interests and passions of the owners. The beauty of the shop lies in its variety, as you can easily find something for anyone. For many, the store serves as a space for people to surround themselves with beauty while feeling comfortable and relaxed.
While Studio 66 promotes creativity and imagination, their commitment to
the environment relates their awareness to their surroundings. Studio 66 doesn’t give out bags, “Who needs them,” stated Hilary, and also maintains a set of requirements for each item they sell. Items must be either made in the U.S, have elements of sustainability, or be a one of a kind creation to be presented within the store. It is this focus, and attention to the production process that guides the work of Hilary and Maria.
The curious are rewarded soon after they step through the door, as Studio 66 offers a unique shopping experiences from entrance to exit. Presenting eclectic items of all sorts, Studio 66 celebrates creativity while promoting the assets of their community.
