The Chand Baori well, situated near the small Indian village of Abnaheri (near Jaipur), is one of the deepest step wells in the world. The well was built sometime during the 9th century, and boasts 3500 small steps spanning 13 stories and 100 feet. Legend has it that the well was built in a single night by ghosts, and was built with so many steps, that if someone were to drop a coin into it, it could never be retrieved. The basic structure of the stepwell, or bawdi, was actually quite common in West India for centuries, with Chand Baori being perhaps the most extraordinary architectural example. Props to Nick on the joogage.

If I’m not mistaken, this step well is featured in a ridiculously beautiful film to watch, “The Fall.”
You should definitely check it out.
